Variables

Independent Variable: the calcium tablet that dissolved.

Dependent Variable: the types of soda.

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

General Plan

In this experiment it will be determined if common sodas effect teeth enamel. Does clear, citrus or darker colored soda have different affects on the calcium pills or even human teeth? Calcium pills will be used in the place of the actual tooth. There will be six different kinds of sodas, each a different flavor. Making sure all the sodas are lukewarm and about the same temperature. 1.5 oz of soda will be distributed into six different 3 oz plastic cups. Then one calcium pill will be deposited into each of the four 3oz plastic cups. The calcium pill will remain in the soda for 120 hours or five days. The calcium pills will be observed each day at the same time, and changes to the calcium pill will be noted. The cups need to be placed and kept in the same location for the entire 120 hours. Four different trials will be conducted.

Potential Problems And Solutions

Any problems that happened were that it was hard to find a Place to keep the sodas and that it was hard to lift up the pill to put it into the soda. If this experiment was in a lab then it would have been done more professional.

Detailed Procedure

Procedure:

Get all materials gathered at school.

Draw a line with a permanent marker on each of the 36 plastic cups. It should be 2.5 centimeters up the cup.

Label 6 of the cups Coca-Cola and a trial number (# 1-6), label 6 of the cups Root Beer, repeat with Sierra mist, Sunkist, Mt. dew, and Sprite.

Pour the Coca-Cola soda into the 6 cups marked with that soda, up to the 2.5 cm line. Repeat with other sodas.

Mass each calcium pill in grams, add data to data table, and take picture of the pill.

Place one calcium pill in each in each cup.

cut squares out of paper towels and cover each individual cup.

Put all cups in the JBES science room green room on shelf.

Wait 24 hours, then remove each calcium pill and weigh them.

record weight on table. And photograph.

return pill to cup.

repeat steps eight through ten for five days.

Now the experiment is complete you may dispose of your tablets, cups, and soda’s.

Data Analysis

Conclusion

The experiment was conducted to determine which type of soda dissolved a calcium tablet the most. The different sodas were the independent variables and the mass of the calcium tablets were the dependent variable. The results showed that sunkist dissolved the most. Sierra Mist dissolved a mean of 1.33 grams. Sunkist dissolved a mean of 2.36 grams. Mug Root Beer dissolved a mean of 0.21 grams. Mountain Dew dissolved a mean of 1.67 grams. Coca Cola dissolved a mean of 0.26 grams.

Discussion

The question for this experiment was if darker colored sodas effect a calcium tablet more? This question was answered through the experiment. The experiment showed that the soda that was brighter in color had the most affect. The evidence was the dissolved calcium tablets. In this case the hypothesis was not supported by the results. We figured out that the soda with the most citric acid dissolves the calcium most . It was hypothesized that the root beer and coke would have the most effect.

In the experiment the problems were, having little time to get all of the calcium tablets into cups fastly, and when having to weigh the tablet some were on the verge of crumbling and might be disrupted if touched. In the experiment it was changed that the tablet would be weighed each day, instead it was weighed at the end of 120 hours also known as five days. A scale was used to measure the mass of the tablets, data was collected of how many grams the tablets weighed and the ingredients of the soda. In the future a better scale could be used and a different type of device can be used to lift the tablet. The information gained from this experiment can help people universally make a choice to save their teeth one step at a time.
